Our five year adventure in Doha, Qatar ended June 1, 2012, but the memories will always remain. It's back to Texas where I have decided...Qatar isn't cornering the market on "quirky", as I once believed. Thanks for opening my eyes to the world, Doha!

Zvonareva Rules in Doha

And the winner is...

A very excited Vera Zvonareva from Russia

Defeating World #1 Caroline Wozniacki from Denmark

in the Qatar Ladies Tennis Open 2011

And as always in Doha, expect the unexpected with great entertainment between matches. This time it was crazy somersaults off a bouncy beam with spot on landings every time.

Hold the press ~ Is that Betty Burqa next to me??

Add to all that some fun people to share our VIP meal at the quarter finals catered by The Four Seasons (ooh~la~la) and you have the perfect weekend. So, who doesn't love Doha?

Doha Skyline

I found a great spot to capture Doha's ever growing skyline. I wish so much that I had a picture from this same vantage point when we arrived in Qatar in June of 2007. Since then, this place has "blown up". I can only imagine what it will look like in 2022 for the World Cup.

Not exactly what a lot of people envision
when they first hear of the tiny country of Qatar.

Another One Bites the Dust

She Came, She Saw, She Conquered
She's Outta Here

Friday, February 25, 9:00a.m. won't come fast enough for Courtney, my Pink Pumps friend and part time partner in crime. She is leaving me in the dust, literally, to join a much better partner back in Houston, her husband. Though our age difference is enough for Courtney to be my daughter, it was an instant sisterly connection on our first meeting eight months ago. Before that day, Courtney had been corresponding with me through my blog and emails to find out about desert life. We hooked up when she arrived in Doha and the rest is history. It was short term, but so much fun. Enjoy your hubby, Court! We shall see you on the flip side!

**********************************************

I picked up Courtney today for our "until next time" lunch and got really tickled when I came across the security guard and his big yellow construction sign that read, "CAUTION, ROAD BLOCKER IN USE" ~ I wasn't prepared on my way in for the pic, so I took it through my side mirror upon exiting.

So, here's a pic of the aforementioned ROAD BLOCKER

Cute cone, huh? Woooo, I'm skeered.

Safety IS Satisfaction

Just a little something that ran across my twitter feed yesterday. Wish I could take credit for this Doha doozy, but it goes to @JonoH. Thanks for the laugh!

Every construction worker's dream...

Stay Safe, Peeps!

(Maybe Mick Jagger should have incorporated
a little more safety in his life)

The People are Speaking

“Freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor;
it must be demanded by the oppressed.”
M.L.King, Jr.

What's happening in the Middle East?

Maybe the question should be, what's not happening. The newspapers, televisions, twitter and all social conversations are pointing towards the Middle East these days. Revolutions, revolts, protests, uprisings, awakenings~you name it, it's out there. I won't even venture to give an opinion on the matter. I have no analysis or pithy comments to make for I'm not schooled in the politics of the region. That being said, however, I'm not understanding how peaceful protests can be met head on with such aggression and violence. I am shocked, to say the least, to find Bahrain caught up in this same scenario. (Al Jazeera Live Blog coverage) Who's next? Qatar? Bite my tongue. After being quizzed by a friend from the States this morning via Twitter that very question, I posed the same to my friends.

@DanCMos to me...
my response to Dan...

After I answered Dan, I began to wonder what the rest of my Twitter world's thoughts were on the subject. They would be a better source than someone that's a self proclaimed bubble dweller, so I posed the question to them...

I received a few responses from Qataris and expats alike that reaffirmed my beliefs and truthfully made me feel a lot better about the whole subject. No, these are not experts in the field, but they are real people with vested interest in their country...

Rest assured family and friends, all is well in the land of sand. I'd be the first to skedaddle if it were otherwise

...Peace Out

Monday Musings

Do you need to smile? Or perhaps you prefer the confounded look? All one has to do in Doha is step out of the house for a bit to achieve these goals.

Yesterday's sightings...

Hoping you all had a "Beautilul" Valentine's Day yesterday
and were able to "flee your memories" ~say what?
(compliments of Al Shaheen formally The Dream Store)

"Healthy Paper Cups" ~ packed with nutrients or just an alternative to other "unhealthy" paper cups. Scary.

"I am the First"? ~ Now that's an original Saloon name,
and exactly, what does that mean?

In front of our villa~No worries, no children or pets were harmed while capturing of this photo~afterward~all bets off.

A neighbor's villa in the hood ~ Why ask why?

******************************************************

Special thanks to my son, Dustin for providing the all in one
confounded/smiling look that he does so well.

Ride Like the Wind

I've got to ride
Ride like the wind
to be free again

...Christopher Cross

David and I had a couple of choices yesterday on what our outing for the day would be. There was an indoor Red Bull Crashed Ice qualifier at City Centre Mall or kite boarding adventures going on at Zikreet Beach. Yep, no brainer. Have you been to City Center on a Friday afternoon? Out on the free and open road to the desert we headed. Our friend, Ahmad, told us to meet him with camera in hand at Zikreet at 2:00pm. My bad, I forgot to ask him if that was real time or Qatari time. Turns out it was Qatari time, as we met up with him at 3:00pm. No worries, we didn't get there until 2:30 anyway. That would be Sybil time. It was a beautiful windy day, apparently the needed ingredient for successful boarding. The surfers at hand were anywhere from newbies to experienced with Ahmad being somewhere in the middle. Female surfer chick, Zellie, is a newbie but has already picked up some pretty smooth moves. She's only been at it a couple of months and is honing her talent with the help of the Edge Riders group and their experienced teacher, Jon. Check out their site for info and you can learn to ride like the wind. Me, I'll stand on my two feet on the shore and practice taking pictures. Sorry I missed your jump, Ahmad. Maybe next time. I did, however, catch your crash. You're welcome.

Note: There are maps to the various beaches on Edge Riders website.
