Our five year adventure in Doha, Qatar ended June 1, 2012, but the memories will always remain. It's back to Texas where I have decided...Qatar isn't cornering the market on "quirky", as I once believed. Thanks for opening my eyes to the world, Doha!

Who are Sybil and Kristi?

Aug 2011 update: We've received word that our Qatari Adventures are coming to an end sometime between now and January 1, 2012, much to our sadness.  We'll most likely end up from where we came, the great state of Texas...the next best thing to Doha. I'll keep you posted.

Sybil...born, raised, and schooled in Port Neches/Groves, Texas. Married cross town school rival David Knox and had four kids, boom, boom, boom, boom. She wanted more, but her wise hubby said, "time to stop havin'em and start raisin'em". So, they did. Then one day, opportunity knocked for a job in the Middle East. Her first reaction was, "are you out of your freakin' mind?!". She had lived in Alabama once for three years, but that was as adventurous as she had ever been. Besides, she still had...

Kristi at home, a junior in high school. After a little lot of research, and many pow wows with Kristi over many Schlotzsky's sandwiches, they came to a decision. "Let's do it", never looking back. Well, Kristi did peak back a bit. She was leaving behind the friends she had gone to school with for twelve years, but move forward she did. Kristi completed her one year stint in Doha forging friendships with international kids, graduating from the American School of Doha and managed to get in a few trips that included  London, Thailand, and Abu Dhabi (the capital of the UAE). She treasures the experience and is now back in Austin, Texas in college. Her short stint here influenced her major...International Studies.

And Sybil, how does she feel about living in Doha?

"It's a place to adventure to, but not sure I would want to live in on a permanent basis.  I love the cultures that collide in Doha.  Eighty percent of the people here aren't even from here.  Imagine with me, people from India, Sri Lanka, the Philippines, Malaysia, Egypt, the UK, Australia, Nepal, Bangladesh, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia, Morocco, EVERYWHERE in the world coming together living side by side in one tiny country slightly smaller than the state of Connecticut. Quirkdom ensues.  I'm easily entertained, so it's a great place to be.  It also affords us the opportunity to travel to places that we never dreamed we would.  It's not for everyone.  Negative attitudes need not apply."

Then, there is the reason Sybil is here...husband, David. He works for Chevron Phillips Chemical and is on temporary assignment working at Qatar Chemical.  His new motto since the move... "If Sybil's happy, I'm happy".  Just for the record, David is one wise and happy man.

Other involved parties...

Shea, the oldest son, St Edward's University/Austin 2006
Dustin, second son, working on Masters in Education at Texas State University
Kayla, oldest daughter, St Edward's University grad 2010

  4. Isaac, I have very fond memories of "the Groves"! My baby daughter is in Angers, France for a semester. I'm not so sure that she is enamored with the French & their ways. Ha!
