Our five year adventure in Doha, Qatar ended June 1, 2012, but the memories will always remain. It's back to Texas where I have decided...Qatar isn't cornering the market on "quirky", as I once believed. Thanks for opening my eyes to the world, Doha!

Lighting Follow Up

I really had full intentions of "retiring" this building, but it keeps coming back to haunt me. David and I were walking the corniche last night when he noticed something a little different in the night skyline. "Look, your building is lit up", he says. Haha ~ my building. Yeah, you know the one. Well the question has come back to haunt me...

"Tell us, does the "penis" building light up at night? Curious minds want to know!"
...Karen

After a little detective work, my answer to Karen was an emphatic...

"NO
, it does NOT light up at night."

Well times have changed and an update is in order. I somehow was left off the guest list for its "official lighting" ceremony, understandably so, I suppose, for as much grief as I've dished on it. Love it or hate it, the building is a great conversation piece. And now that it's in lights, it's starting to grow on me.

Qatar Hero

We all know how unstable the Middle East is these days and the unrest is creeping closer to Qatar everyday that goes by. If we don't get Justin Bieber to Qatar on the next train, I fear a revolution is unavoidable. Day in day out via twitter, teenagers are demanding for the Biebs to make an appearance and I hear nothing from the rumor mill about any upcoming desert tour. Enter the backup plan. I am nominating the following Doha twitteratti to step up to the plate in case protests get too hot to handle. Don't be shy guys. Here's your chance to "take it for the team". Who will be the Qatar Hero?

In no certain order the nominees are...

If you would like to nominate someone not listed, you can send their pic via email to me or DM @SybnDoha and I'll make sure to add them.

VOTE FOR YOUR FAVORITE NOW!

Clicking the pics will reveal their twitter identities.

Blue Skies

It's a beautiful day in Doha, as our four day monsoon has moved on and the blue skies have reappeared. So grab a chair (or a hose), along with your favorite beverage and sit back and relax.

April Showers

The word on the street these days
...

rain

Looking out my front door

It appears that April showers doesn't only apply to my previous little corner of the world in Southeast Texas. It's certainly ringing true in my home away from home of Qatar. Today marks the fourth day in a row of the wet stuff. Now, keep in mind that although the minuscule amounts that we are receiving in no way compares to Texas, it does create quite a stir. Middle East journalist, Omar Chatriwala, sheds some light on local reactions in Global Voices this week. This was written on just the second day of rains. Imagination what thoughts Day 4 is bringing.

#YouAreQatari

While you were sleeping, (unless you are Qatari~they don't sleep according to some of their own tweets) twitter was going crazy with the hashtag #YouAreQatari. Yes, the twitter stream was rolling faster than a Land Cruiser flashing his brights in your rearview mirror with Qataris poking a little good humored fun at themselves. Most were in Arabic, but I gathered some of the English ones together in case you missed it. We had a few non Qatari's piping in (moi included), but "retweets" by the locals showed that we were on the mark, as well. Thanks for the late night entertainment, Tweeps...

Plug in the #YouAreQatari hash tag to catch up on the rest of the tweets and put in your two cents or feel free to add yous in the comment section!

Dial for Doha Delivery

Once upon a time in my Qatar social circle, I was known as Delivery Queen. Pots banging in my kitchen tended to give me a headache, so I quickly adopted the mantra "I call, You deliver". Just between you and me, my delivery days of late are nil to none. I've actually started to like the tunes the pots are playing. My impressive collection of delivery menus is gathering a nice layer of dust and Doha sand. Don't get me wrong though, Paula Dean's not inviting me to her show anytime soon. Here's a little hint of some of the places around town that deliver. Don't fret if you don't see your favorite eatery. Check out Doha Delivery for all your delivery needs. How's that for a free plug, guys?

And remember peeps, the delivery folks are risking
life and limb to get your food to you. TIPS are appreciated!
