Just Ramblings

Doha's skyline is really coming to life these days as David and I noted on a leisurely walk Tuesday night. I'd like to take advantage of more of those beautiful evenings with mild temps before the mercury starts rising, but I'm afraid the project that called us to Qatar in the first place has other plans. They're still trying to get their unit up and running which will require quite a few more late nights. By that time, I hopefully (if I ever buy my ticket!) will be in the states, while David will be country hopping in Asia on a recruiting trip (Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines). I will gladly miss out on that trek to make Kayla's graduation in Austin, but it would have been nice if they wouldn't have overlapped. David will join us in the states some time after his trip, which reminds me...the spontaneous vacation with the kids is on the back burner. The stress of planning it in a short amount of time with such a small time frame to work with was getting the best of me. I mulled over an email I received from Doha friend, Gina, that suggested I bribe the girls with a shopping spree, instead. Hey, not bad. And, so I did. Kayla accepted the offer graciously and hopefully has convinced Kristi to do the same. And Dustin, well, it's Dustin, we keep him in the dark unless otherwise necessary, so he didn't even know there was a possibility he was going to be whisked off to bask in Bali. Bottom line: Now I get more time in the USA. Gotta go. I'm off to work for my last day and then it's summer break. Woohoo!

Let it Go, Just Let it Go

~besides not being able to plan a trip without extreme anxiety, there's a reminder of my ocd staring me down in my kitchen

They say a picture is worth a thousand words. This one speaks volumes, as well, I'm afraid. Besides the obvious cooking embargo that's underway in my kitchen, it addresses my obsessive compulsive disorder that I inherited quite honestly, thanks mom. In a matter of a couple of weeks (since I discovered that Quiznos delivers to our area), I have amassed a collection of sandwich boxes that I can't bring myself to throw away. So, like my mom, and the mom before her did, I'm hanging on to things like I'm living through the Great Depression. I can't just let go. Maybe I can recycle them for Christmas packaging. I have been known to use cereal boxes when wrapping. Heck these are so decorative that maybe I can just stick a bow on them. Warning: Coming December, 2010 to a tree near you.

As the Tree Turns

Those of you that have followed me all along have grown up with this tree and know its history of butchery. This morning while still in my pj's, sipping coffee, and catching up with Kayla on the phone, David (yes, he got a midweek reprieve!) pointed to the window to indicate that the tree trimmers were outside. Poor Kayla, didn't know what hit her as I slammed the phone down screaming, "Gotta go!". I arrive outside looking wild eyed and crazy hollering, "don't cut my tree!". Of course they looked me and said, "no hablo ingles", well not really, but if they coulda, they woulda. About that time, my old gardener, Kumar spotted me from across the street and galloped over with a Mighty Mouse "here I come to save the day" smirk. After explaining to him that I didn't want my tree turned into a ball OR a cube, he smiled and nodded assuring me of his complete understanding of the situation. Feeling better I returned inside to continue my morning ritual only to take a peek and let out a huge gasp. David ran outside demanding a "cease fire" and you can see what we were left with...one oversized chia pet.

Decision Overload

Yes, I live a relatively stress free life here in Doha. The out of sight out of mind mantra is the one I've adopted with the kids 8000 miles away. It works for me. Planning trips home is where my stress level begins to rise. It's a huge timing and logistics game which I hate to play. If I were just Dorothy and only had to close my eyes and tap my ruby red slippers together. After laying out the finalized plans for my ensuing trip home to David over dinner, he casually tosses out, "hey, don't the girls have another flight coming to them before the summer's end?" (company perk). I wanted to hurl my half eaten fries at him from across the Bennigan's booth. There he was, throwing out that proverbial wrench into my plans. Crunch, that's the sound of my plans being wadded up before my eyes. So, now I'm in the midst of a ton of endless vacation destinations to meet the kids and it's limited to a one week frame of when no one will be in school. Checking out beaches, hotels, airfares, and comparing them all against each other. Then there's that counted on answer from David and the kids, "it doesn't matter to me". Yeah, until we're wherever and they look at me and say, "why?" Any shortcomings will be placed on me. I know this sounds so petty, but these things consume me. I cannot just pick one. Yoohoo, I'm the one that has issues with clicking that "confirm" button. It terrifies me. David's going to be sorry that he ever opened his mouth. Those two "complimentary" company sponsored flights are going to cost him a fortune. Touche.
