Our five year adventure in Doha, Qatar ended June 1, 2012, but the memories will always remain. It's back to Texas where I have decided...Qatar isn't cornering the market on "quirky", as I once believed. Thanks for opening my eyes to the world, Doha!

Did I Say Debauchery?

Ok, no more crying over spilled milk, well unless you paid QR5 for it! Enough, I'll pull myself up by the boot straps (or would that be sandal straps in Qatar?) and forge on. Oh, what to ramble about today. Hmm...I thought that the Wall Street Journal's Saudi/Bahrain article on the top left sidebar was quite interesting...Saudis flocking to Bahrain, the Middle East's answer to Nevada's "Sin City". Long story short, the Saudis are crossing over to Bahrain to indulge in booze and to maintain the world's oldest profession, keeping it alive and stimulated. Hmm. You see, these things are forbidden in the Kingdom. It's a multimillion dollar gig for Bahrain, but it looks as though it may be one that they would rather live without. I really live in a bubble over here. I mean I've heard of such things, but this article makes it sound like it's happening in epidemic proportions. If you follow the Swine Flu in these parts, you would think people are way more worried about that than their wicked debauchery. I haven't figured out yet who is putting these people on their pedestal, me or themselves? I just know that the longer I'm here, the more I realize, they are no different than anyone else. Same trials, tribulations, and temptations as everyone else. Westerners aren't the only ones with that market cornered. The irony is that doesn't Saudi Arabia house Mecca, the holiest city of Islam? Are these the same people that are crossing the causeway to fulfill their hidden desires? I'm just saying, don't act holier than thou if you are not. No finger pointing. We are all sinners. Let us not pretend to be what we are not. It will all catch up in the end.

Whoa! I'll step down from the pulpit, now. Where did that diatribe come from? That stupid article. One last thought, it was in the media. Who knows how true it really is. I'll go back to my bubble now and pretend that all is good everywhere.

WARNING!!

BYOM (Bring your own milk)

I'm not a happy camper at the moment. Paul (restaurant) at Landmark charged me for the milk in my coffee at breakfast this morning. I kid you not. "American coffee with milk please"...."That will be QR5 ($1.37) extra, madame". Are you kidding me?! Isn't milk with coffee an automatic, even in the land of sand? What's this side of the world coming to? My friend ordered a cappuccino, milk included, for the same amount of money. What's the reasoning for this madness? You can drive like an idiot, break in front of me in the grocery line (if you live through the process), tell me that low fat milk is "same same" as skim milk, but do not charge me for milk in my coffee. I will pay QR100 to sip tea at The Ritz, but I repeat, do not charge me for milk in my coffee. Can you feel my anger. The more I think about it, the angrier I get. I should have headed to Carrefour when the waiter informed me of this highway robbery and bought a jug of my own and set it on the table. Aah, hindsight.

Review: As much as I hate to say it, other than ripping me off for an ounce of milk (not even steamed!), eating at Paul is a nice experience with fresh croissants to die for.

Pricing: Three eggs, bread basket (w/croissant), coffee (NO MILK), juice = QR39

"As the Pink Villas Turn"

It's the sequel to "As the World Turns", here in the pink villas. We were out and about in the hood the other evening and came upon a camera crew at our dear departed Frances' home. Oops, that's deported, not departed. Well, not exactly deported, either. She's one of our gal pals that headed back to Texas last month. Anyway, there was a gathering of traditionally dressed men of young and old in her ex front yard with cameras rolling. Of course, I didn't let it go without asking the crew in the street what was going on. He informed me that they were filming a "Qatar Drama". I'm thinking to myself, if you want to film drama, buddy, just hit the streets and film the traffic. So, it seems the pink villas are gong to hit the big screen. Well, a screen, anyway. I'm not sure why our villas were selected, as we only have a few locals that live here. It must have been the colors of our villas that intrigued the producers or perhaps it was Frances' dead corn rows in the foreground. Regardless, wrap it up...it's a take.

Qatar vs Australia

We scored a couple of tickets to the Qatar vs Australia 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifying game from our new villa neighbor Steve. He and his wife Ella, and daughter Morgan, invited us to go along to watch the underdog Qatar National team take on the Socceroos. I'm sure the Aussies were expecting to roll right over Qatar, but we hung in there to the very end with no goals scored after ninety minutes of play. The 0-0 tie actually gave the Australians enough tournament points to qualify for the 2010 World Cup. We ended up sitting on the Aussie side (Steve, you traitor!), which was in itself quite entertaining, as they were what one would call a bit of a rowdy crowd. They had an unending repertoire of songs, chants, and cheers for the occasion, some not so family oriented. Unfortunately for them, they got their crowd bouncing beach ball confiscated and when one of their fans retaliated, he got himself bounced from the crowd, as well. His weapon of choice: popcorn. I guess an assault is an assault. The game and the people watching were all captivating, as always. Thanks, guys...enjoyed it!

Here's Morgan happy to know that the crowd control force is watching her back.

From Texas to Tennessee to New York

After being so blessed to be able to travel to quite a few destinations in a short amount of time, who would have ever thought that I would be most excited about visiting a state in my own home country. Move over Texas, I am so pumped about traveling to New York with my two most favorite girlfriends in the whole wide world. I've got our plane tickets, our hotel room and I just hit the confirm button for Lion King tickets on Broadway. Oh my gosh, I am stoked right now. I've been emailing back and forth with my nephew, Kevin, that lives in New York, not even realizing that he lives in Manhattan just a subway ride from our hotel. I am pleased that he will be joining Kayla, Kristi and me for our first Broadway experience. Don't fret Texas (and Tennessee!), I'm looking forward to catching up with family, friends and some old favorite restaurants, as well. Just a tad over a month and we'll be there. Do the Tom Bodett thing of Motel 6 fame for us and "leave the light on", please.

Note to brother Michael: Tom is on Twitter...I remember that you loved old Tommy boy.
