Our five year adventure in Doha, Qatar ended June 1, 2012, but the memories will always remain. It's back to Texas where I have decided...Qatar isn't cornering the market on "quirky", as I once believed. Thanks for opening my eyes to the world, Doha!

Pass the Pumpkin

Do we celebrate Halloween in Qatar, you ask? I don't know about everyone else, but our major grocery stores, LuLu and Carrefour do. For about $4.50 a pound you can take one home this holiday season for all your jack~o~lantern and pumpkin pie needs. Note the one in the pic prices out at 1576 QR. That would be a whopping 433 U.S. buckaroos.

Like I said, pass the pumpkin, literally. Sweet potato pie is sounding better and better.

  1. It's interesting to read about Carrefour and LuLu as your major grocery stores. It used to be The Centre that was the grocery store (plus the store of choice for stationery, clothes, linen, towels etc). Is The Centre still there?

  2. WOW is right, Gina, but wouldn't your girls love it :P

Elaine, pretty sure The Centre is still going strong. Mega Mart is there, though I can say I've never visited it in our 4+ years here. It's across town for me and just not convenient. LuLu (similar to a super Walmart) is just around the corner and carries a fare amount of US brands. Just yesterday I saw that we now have Peter Pan peanut butter & Smuckers jellies. Things are looking up ;p

  3. Good to know its still there. It was the store of choice in the 'old days' and often had US brands. It was also the place where I had my first taste of Baskin Robbins ice cream - a love affair that still lingers to this day, although they don't make my favourite Chocolate Fudge Chunks 'n Chips any more.
Another store I remember going to was Salam Plaza, but that didn't have groceries.

  4. You've never been to The Centre or to MegaMart at The Centre?

  5. Can you believe that, Gina? NEVER! The closest I ever got to it was a few years ago when we ate at the Great Wall of China ;P My motto was (before my LuLu came along), "If Carrefour doesn't have it, we don't need it". We survived, by the way ;)

  6. You may want to consider going to MegaMart for the first time before you leave! They actually had decently priced pumpkins and I got some cute ones for only 12 QR (http://alittleoryx.blogspot.com/2011/10/pumpkins-at-megamart.html). :)
