Our five year adventure in Doha, Qatar ended June 1, 2012, but the memories will always remain. It's back to Texas where I have decided...Qatar isn't cornering the market on "quirky", as I once believed. Thanks for opening my eyes to the world, Doha!

No Lashes for Doha

This was a front page article in The Qatar Tribune last weekend, October 31st, to be exact. It seems to be more of a wish list than news. To be fair, the possibility of rain in the country is news, I guess. In the event that even the slightest of drops fall, you can bet your boots that twitter and facebook will be abuzz with locals breaking the news (yours truly, included). Now, the term "lash" seems a bit harsh to me, especially since the skies never appeared to even think about unloading on us. I didn't even know there was a possibility until I finally picked up my Tribune and scanned it a few days later. I really love the part where the meteorology department declares that we have already entered autumn. Rocket scientists, I tell you. Even more enlightening is the fact that they forecast that temps will drop in the coming days. Amazing. Hah, take that global warming! In the meantime, I'll just sit tight and wait on those "smart" showers. Tootles.

Bread Bandit

We've either got a big rat in the villa or a sneaky kitten. "It" is still nameless since Karen's post about her male dog named Tara has made me a little paranoid on the kitten's sex. So for the sake of this post, we'll just call it "Pat". Pat has been a great kitten thus far. It was very wary of us at first and didn't socialize and hang out with us unless forced. Pat has really come around and knows its place, curled up at our sides. This cat is a far cry from the psychotic Sykes of yore. I sort of miss the mischievous craziness that he exhibited, but life's a lot more relaxing without it. It seems that Pat has the same hankering for bread that Sykes had. Sykes preferred his straight from the toaster when it popped up, but this one wants it fresh from the plastic bag. Two nights in a row I went in the kitchen to find bread crumbs strewn on the cabinet. I thought it was just a fluke the first night, since its food bowl only had a few crumbs in it. But the second night confirmed that I'm not going to be able leave my bread on the counter. Where's that bread box that David bought me for our first Christmas...the one that I made him take back to the store. Seriously, what was he thinking? Oh, I bet my new bride would die for this. Ok, it's a few years late, but I'm coming around, dear. Bring it on.

Random Tidbits

Maybe the title of this post should have been "blog lite"...

Nothing shy about the kids around here. This young man was waving at me like crazy, so I pulled out my camera. Notice the seat hopping kid in the back.

Not really sure why, but I just liked this wheel barrow. Maybe because it looks like it's been around since the pyramids.

New forestry program in Doha? Hundreds and hundreds of these trees(?) have been planted up and down Khafja Street in front of our villa.

A speed bump on an exit ramp of the parking garage at City Center Mall...I guess the black and orange guard rail along with the arrow is not a good enough indicator that it might be wise to slow your booty down.

Tennis Finale

My last report on tennis...Serena beat Venus. Now that we got that out of the way, I'd rather talk about the trophy presentation and 25th anniversary celebration. I do have to hand it to this country when it comes to putting on an extravaganza. The Sony Ericsson Championship trophy was lowered into the stadium via crane and tennis playing acrobats. It was a site to behold. I was trying to get still pics and video out of one machine and that can get a bit tricky. After the trophy was put on its pedestal and then presented to Serena, the Qatar Tennis Federation put on a show to celebrate their 25 year presence in Doha. It was a befitting end to a great tournament. I'm already looking forward to the men's tournament headed this way in January.

Tennis, Again?

Serena vs Venus in the Doha Sony Ericsson Tournament finals...could it get any better than that? Well, I guess if you were "un"American, it could. We whittled down our six hour event from Friday night to just under four last night. Venus Williams beat out Jelena Jankovic in the first scheduled semifinal match and Caroline Wozniacki bowed out to Serena Williams with an injury early in their match. I have to say I was secretly rooting for the Danish Wozniacki. Maybe it's just the fact that she's only nineteen and tennis is still a passion for her and not a job. I mean, she breaks out into a grin when she makes a great play...such a breath of fresh air. We skipped out on the doubles that followed so that we would not be in tennis overload before tonight's finals. Check ya later!
