Our five year adventure in Doha, Qatar ended June 1, 2012, but the memories will always remain. It's back to Texas where I have decided...Qatar isn't cornering the market on "quirky", as I once believed. Thanks for opening my eyes to the world, Doha!

Tex-Mex Chinese, You Say?

Can you seriously read this sign with a straight face? A restaurant with a name like that commands my attention and yes, a visit to check it out. When David asked yesterday, "So, what's the plan?" (code for "I'm hungry!"), I smiled inside. Little did he know I was planning a visit to the aforementioned cafe. I had to keep it secret, since I was pretty sure he would "poo-pah" my idea the moment it left my lips. I just said, "Get in the car and I'll give you directions". Luckily he played the game and didn't even balk when we drove up to the shanty shack restaurant on Airport Road. It was 1:30 in the afternoon and not a soul in the what I would term as "a hole in the wall". The cook and an associate were hanging outside and maybe a bit disappointed when they realized we were headed into their establishment. As we were walking in, I couldn't resist the urge to say, "Chop, chop, people, you have customers!", with a chuckle in my voice, of course. That set the mood and we were off to a good start for our intimate dining experience.

Although, we only saw three menu items that would qualify as Tex-Mex (discounting the non-Mexican items that they just tossed in the words Tex-Mex to disguise them), we gritted our teeth and said, "by golly, we came for Tex-Mex, so we will order Tex-Mex!". We thought about ordering the "beef ball soup" on the specials board, but opted for burritos and the Tex-Mex Empanada. The so called description of "these are SPICY!" proved wrong and what the heck makes potatoes, chicken, and cheese in a pastry Mexican? They tasted fine, but there was no south of the border nostalgia happening for me. Now, the burritos were very tasty and if I had closed my eyes, I could have been sitting at Taco Bell or at the very least one of the so called Mexican restaurants in Doha minus the Arabic seasonings at 1/6th of the price. I have nothing against those flavors, but please restrict them to my kebabs. Here's the kicker. Three Peppers Tex-Mex Chinese Cuisine (I love saying that) has fresh brewed ICED TEA WITH refills. Doha, we have a winner.

Impression: Low key cafe with friendly servers (don't be afraid to be friendly first to set the mood~this applies everywhere, my friends). No, you won't find enchiladas or even tacos on the menu, but you will find chili and burritos. Lots of Chinese fare that looks pretty inviting, as well. Bonus: They serve eggs, hash browns, and toast for breakfast. Coffee with REFILLS!. Nice and cheap. No bells and whistles, but there is a t.v. for your viewing pleasure. And as always, TIP your servers generously, please. They are trying to put food on their tables back home.

Bottom line: We will go back.

  2. Haha...I was pretty proud of that find myself! We had the Mexican Hat Dance on a "78" ~ not too many people out there will even know what that is. This one has quite a different twist, though ;)
