Our five year adventure in Doha, Qatar ended June 1, 2012, but the memories will always remain. It's back to Texas where I have decided...Qatar isn't cornering the market on "quirky", as I once believed. Thanks for opening my eyes to the world, Doha!

Restaurant 29

We made use of a 50% off grand opening invitation that we we were presented with a couple of weeks ago while eating breakfast at the American Grill. The Restaurant 29 invitation described the experience as "fine dining" which included USDA Angus beef to get our attention. Ok, they've got our attention, but can they deliver? We invited another couple and headed over to Beverly Hills Tower in West Bay last night where the restaurant is housed. Guess which floor it's on? From the moment the elevator opened up on floor 29, they had our full attention and equally we had theirs. The service was excellent, professional and warm at the same time. I opted for the Angus filet with garlic mashed potatoes and caramelized onions. There was a portobello mushroom involved, but I knew ahead of time that I would be tossing it David's way. Donna ordered the same, and David and Wayne picked the New York strip as they were out of (or "finish" in Doha speak) their first choice, the porterhouse. The food presentation was excellent, but the final test was the taste. My reaction was of pleasant surprise. It was the real deal, I could have been sitting in a steakhouse in Texas. This wasn't Western Sizzlin'! Ok, so the prices weren't either. We topped off our meal with a hot bread pudding topped with ice cream. Another winner. Oh, I forgot to tell you that when I made reservations, I asked if they had iced tea. "Yes, madame, in the can". My immediate thoughts traveled to my lips and I said, "Oh, no, no, that is nasty!". She put the chef on the line and he told me, "No problem, I will brew you fresh tea". Now, try that at Western Sizzlin'. These people were definitely after David's heart. The tea was a wonderful compliment to the already excellent meal. Definitely a do over.

  1. That reminds me of a place I ate lunch at last week. I had to go to our site in LaPorte and a coworker and I decided to eat lunch at Perry's Steakhouse in Clearlake. I don't know if you have ever heard of Perry's or ever been there, but their signature dish is their famous pork chop. When I say pork chop I mean the dinner chop is 8 inches thick and the lunch chop is 4 inches thick! On Fridays they have a lunch special where you can get the famous pork chop for 10 bucks. This pork chop is worth an hour drive just to experience. I will be going back there!

Here is a link to a picture of the lunch portion. Keep in mind the dinner portion is double the size! Can you imagine?

  2. Christopher Garza...quit teasing me with your pork stories. You know that pig is not allowed in Qatar! We're not even big pork eaters, but that's the first thing we eat when we get back to the states. ;)

  3. We second your recommendation, Sybil. I'd also gotten one of the 50%-off coupons, so we went for dinner tonight since the coupon expires on Monday. I got the surf & turf at a colleague's recommendation; Ella got the filet like you did, and Morgan (yes, she tagged along and behaved herself!) had the chicken medallions with pasta. The food was very good, and we also were pleased with the friendly service. (By the way, we shared the bread pudding based on your recommendation, and it was a huge hit for everyone--the plate was clean when it went back!)
